In it's third annual instalment, the Lindsay-McCambridge Hat is a textbook showcase of informal Ultimate. With a lot of the core BU players away in Bundoran for Irish Beach Training and others at EUC, attendance was low this year. This did not deter the enthusiastic TDs or the 14 or so players that came out for the day. With a relaxed start, nice and late after the billed starting time (90 minutes), Rob and Darragh drew names out of the hat for our two teams that would play six a side for the afternoon.
The teams were nicely balanced, and afforded some decent Ultimate, but it wasn't the final victory that was the real prize here. Ultimate glory came in the form of dominating the novelty points played. For one long point we were only allowed to score off a mac. There were many failed attempts on each side, but after a scrambled mac around a crowd of defenders, Pete managed to pull down the mac'd disc to the sound of cheering from both teams. For another point we played a left-handed only, which allowed naturally left-handed Jason to dominate, and gave team A a significant advantage. Other highlights included a few upside-down disc points, with hammers and scoobers aplenty, a one handed point, a layout only score - where young Pete enthusiastically threw himself on the ground more than once with the disc nowhere near him. Team A (Rob's team) ended up eventual winners, by a small margin.
We broke for lunch, then played a quick game of County Antrim vs County Down. North Down and South Down put their differences aside, but still couldn't hold back the might of Antrim who romped to a quick victory. MVP of the day was Darragh's younger brother Kealan who displayed some dominance in the air, particularly on D. Thanks to the TDs for a fun afternoon. Here's to the next one!
Dave.
