All Ireland Open Championships - The Report

On the weekend of the 21st - 22nd August 2010 the All Ireland Open Championship travelled north to Belfast. A first for Belfast and a first for the TD’s. Eight teams in all entered to battle it out for Irelands Top prize in Ultimate.

As per last year, game lengths were kept at 90 minutes, which was a shock for some teams that hadn't played in last years event, but every team managed rightly with it.

This year was the first outing for three teams, REBEL and the 2 BUG teams, and all were ready to make their mark on All Irelands.

The weekend went off without a hitch, with the sheltered location protecting us from the worst of the wind. The weather held all weekend with clear skies. There were only a few cases of sunburn and the rain literally held off till the last second of the presentation.

Saturday

Team Groupings
Group 1 Group 2
Johnny Chimpo Broc
Rebel Jabba
OCS BUG
BUG 2 Juice

With the eight teams separated into 2 groups of 4, the pool games started promptly at 9am. All games were very tight with the exception of one bagel. This was going to be a tough weekend for all teams with the standard of Ultimate I saw and played against was brilliant.

The only change of seedings in the group stage was Jabba and BUG switching places. A very close game between Jabba and Broc nearly saw Group 2 being thrown into a 3 way tie, but Broc prevailed to keep top seed of Group 2 and Chimpo topped Group 1.

Sunday

This saw the first of the cross-overs. With Chimpo and Broc winning their groups, they got a lie in on Sunday morning, with the top and bottom teams in each group not partaking in the cross over stage.

No surprise cross-over happened and the top 4 and bottom 4 teams now set their sights on battling for the Championship Final and the Plate final.

There was a very close match between Rebel and Broc for a place in the final, with Broc coming out on top after a win in the cap. This left the final between Johnny Chimpo Vs Broc.

This was an excellent game to watch and I'm sure a better game to be playing in with Chimpo trying to retain their champion status for another year. Broc won through in the end to become the new All Ireland Champions. BROC (15) CHIMPO (9)

MVP of the Final went to Mark Early, winning the Simon Cocking Medal.

Plate final winners were Jabba winning against OCS 15-10.

Winners of Spirit were BUG 2.

Congratulations to all who participated on the weekend. It was a pleasure for us to have all the teams up in Belfast and we thank you all for travelling up. We hope we have set a standard which we can improve upon for the future.

Thanks has to go to firstly to the IFDA, in particular Dom, for all their help and patience in regards to organising the tournament, and to the Broc players who helped set up pitches on the Friday night.

Please find below all final standings and spirit scores from the weekend.

Many thanks to you all for making it a great weekend!
