2011

The following were nominated for the Belfast Ultimate Awards 2011.

Player of the Year

Who has achieved most on the pitch during the year

  • Adam Glover - Another successful year for Adam. This one saw him graduate to the big boys Irish Open team, competing at EUC2011 in Maribor. He was also a dominate force during Summer League this year - there might have been other people on his team. Nobody's really sure. But when Adam was on the pitch CHASE scored. When he wasn't they didn't. 2011 also saw Adam step-up and start organising and taking responsibility for some of the BUG training sessions. This lead on to the natural progress of him captaining BUG at All-Ireland Open and Cork Open.
  • Alan 'Marco' McWatters - Marco has had a fantastic season in 2011. From throwing the winning score at Love Easter final to becoming the first Northern Irish player to ever captain an Irish International Squad, Marco has been a stand out player leading the way by example this year. Reports from World Beach put it that Marco put everything into his play, pushing the team to greater things. His efforts and achievements deserve recognition.
  • Stephen 'Steve' Hammond - Stephen can be considered one of the backbone players in BU, as he is always there, always ready to train or play a tournament, or participate in any way he can. He has received accolades throughout the year reflecting his level of effort and work rate on the pitch, and has played for the Ireland Beach team

Best Beginner

Best player who's been playing for less than 15 months.

  • Dom Curran - regular attendance at training during the summer, Dom has shown excellent improvement. Add to this a good performance at Cork Open.
  • Isaiah Neve - "Ginger loudmouth who had a good first season as a Queens beginner. Excellent cutting skills which he used to great affect during Wreckin Boyz summer league campaign to earned the prizes of “Top Scorer(probably)” and “Most Annoying American”" - as put by his nominator.
  • Pete McGrath - started playing as a beginner last year for Queens and has many traits of his mentor Gaston - "tall, quiet, mysterious, handsome... OK I’m waffling now." - as put by his nominator. He turned up to training regularly, played for Queens at Whacking Day, Indoor IVs, Cage Rage, Love Easter, and represented Frisbeezer in the BUSL. "A deserving winner, purely for the fact he broke his mentors face in a failed attempt to consolidate power of the Pandas." - as put by his nominator.
  • Richard Sayers - great contribution and commitment to BU, attending both Beaches Be Crazy and Cork Open. As well as making the current Ireland Junior Open squad.
  • Scott Walker - played Ultimate for the first time in this year's Summer League for Wreckin' Boyz and showed a great deal of raw talent, including some fantastic timing and pace. "I don't look forward to having to mark him in the future" said one of his nominators.

Biggest Contribution to Belfast Ultimate

Who deserves recognition for their efforts.

  • Adam Glover - as well as organising training sessions at Sea Park during the early part of summer, Adam has been working hard for the past few months on Clubmark and other accreditations for BU.
  • Chris 'Windy' Millar - for the sheer amount of time and effort put in to a remarkable number of BU ventures. He is the man who gets things done in BU.
  • David Hammond - Belfast Ultimate's chief negotiator, Dave went looking for some pitches for Summer League. What he got instead was training facilities for BU members, with access to a club house, including showers, as well as pitches for summer league (and other tournaments). Then, continuing his role as TD, he spent a ridiculous amount of effort ensuring Summer League was another great success.
  • Pete Gaston - Another year of notable contribution to Ultimate in Belfast from Pete. Once again this ultimate stalwart headed up the Christmas Cracker and Love Easter tournaments, both of which he created a number of years ago. These tournaments are now a staple to Ultimate in the north and were well attended this year (snow permitting). El Gaston also set up a brand new team full of beginners for the BUSL called Frisbeezer where they improved throughout to finally secure a win and a draw on the final day of the league. To conclude the year he is now Captain of QUB while studying medicine in his spare time.
  • Richard 'Sich' Constable - Sich has really stepped up to the mark this year and has made his passion for the growth and continued success clear. He ran the majority of training sessions, helping everyone develop as players. In November he took over as Chairman of the BU committee and has been driving the new committee to bigger and better things. Belfast Ultimate in 2012 is looking very exciting, and largely thanks to Sich's efforts.

Most Spirited Player

The player who has most exemplified spirit and sportsmanship throughout the year.

  • Alex Weisz - the man never gives up.
  • Benoit Bertet - great knowledge of the rule of the game and fantastic application of them on the pitch. Always has the ability to lift his team mates with a joke but also the ability to give more serious advice to help each player reach their potential. Fantastic guy on an off the pitch who completely embodies the spirit of the game!
  • Kathryn Lyons
